HAMBA KAHLE COMRADE RHOLIHLAHLA NELSON MANDELA
“Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.”
from A Psalm of Life by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
SACCAWU like the whole country and the world knew this day will come, but we are not less shocked, nor less sad with the loss of the greatest son Africa and South Africa has given birth to.
Comrade Nelson Mandela will always remain in our hearts. While for many of us a part of us had also died with his passing, we believe a part of him must be reborn in all of us to honour his legacy.
This revolutionary, global icon, statesman, stalwart of our movement, leader of the African National Congress and father of the nation will always remain in our hearts. It is under the leadership of Comrades Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Govan Mbeki, Chris Hani and others that we have defeated the apartheid regime and ushered in a democratic dispensation that today are viewed by the world as a model for post-conflict countries.
Despite 27 years in prison and many other difficulties he faced in his life, Comrade Nelson Mandela always remained true the ideals of Justice, Peace and an egalitarian society.
In this time as we mourn the passing of Tata Nelson Mandela, we must hold firm to his ideals and like him pursue without pause for the quest of realising his ideals.
Like all others throughout the country and across the world we share the grief of this loss. We mourn with the nation.
We also wish to extend our condolences to his family and all those who like SACCAWU feel this loss no less personal.
Long live Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela!
Long Live Our President!
Rest in Peace
